Chapter 75 It still has to be black stockings!
"I heard that girl agreed to see that unknown doctor from the countryside without our consent? I only found out about this now. Do you even consider me your wife?"
In the library archives of the Milan-Dill Academy, Albert Igor, the vice dean of the Finance Department, listened to the beautiful woman's incessant chatter, his brow furrowed, and without even turning his head, said, "This is the academy's library; noise is prohibited. You are of noble birth; don't you have any manners?"
"You're talking to me about manners?" The woman's smile was twisted. "Having an affair with your student in the library and fathering a bastard child—that's your manners as a scholar?"
Albert paused for a moment after hearing this, then said, "The decision to meet was made by Father, and the list was selected by the butler based on the conditions proposed by Father. If you have any objections, you can go and make a scene with them."
"You..." The woman's face twisted with anger. Who would dare to question the old man's decision?
"I advise you not to resort to any means," Albert warned in a low voice. "The old man doesn't like to get involved in these messy affairs, but only if you don't disrupt his plans. That doctor is someone he values. Yesterday, only Nayuki was chosen for a blind date. If she isn't chosen, then it's all up to you. But if she is, and you dare to interfere in any way, I assure you, the old man will chop off your hand!"
"Look at you, is that the kind of talk a man should be making?" the woman said coldly.
Albert continued reviewing the information without speaking. If he were a strong man, he would not have allowed his beloved woman to be tortured to death by the other party, nor would he have relied on this opportunity to get his daughter out of this hellhole.
He had already found out that his legal wife was planning to marry Nai Xue to a merchant from the north. The merchant was old and extremely wealthy. He was spending money like water to find a noblewoman to marry. In recent years, his father seemed to be in dire need of financial support. His wife was exchanging an illegitimate daughter for the support of a wealthy merchant. The old man would most likely acquiesce.
After realizing this, he even found that he had no way to stop his wife.
If it weren't for this accident, the daughter's tragic fate would have been sealed. The northern nomadic people have a tradition of sons inheriting their fathers' wives, and the daughter was only in her early twenties, so being inherited was almost a predetermined fate!
"Hmph..." Seeing that the other party was pretending to be a turtle again, the woman's eyes flickered, full of resentment.
"Miss Nayuki, your attire might not be enough to capture a man's heart." The butler shook his head slightly when he saw Nayuki's ladylike outfit when she went out to meet men. It was too conservative, and the thick glasses she wore due to years of studying gave her a dull appearance.
"Is Mr. Bright a man who values beauty?" Nayuki asked cautiously.
"Every man is attracted to beauty," the butler chuckled. "Never think that men are an exception."
"If he doesn't like me..." Nayuki asked again.
"His Excellency the Duke will continue to make arrangements for him; his membership in the Igor family was personally appointed by the Master!"
"I understand." Nayuki's eyes lit up upon hearing this. The butler was subtly implying the importance of this Mr. Bright!
She remembered this kindness and quickly said, "Please wait for me a moment longer."
The butler nodded slightly.
Half an hour later, Nayuki came out again, her outfit completely different. She still looked youthful and cute with a pink sweater and elegant glasses, but her lower body was covered by a sexy leather skirt that accentuated her figure and black thermal stockings. The contrast between her pure upper body and seductive lower body created a beautiful effect, which made the men's restlessness even more obvious.
The butler nodded in satisfaction. This girl had always kept a low profile over the years, even at the ball she didn't seem to care about dressing up. But clearly, she knew her advantages. Although she had delicate features and a good figure, she was too young and naive. She was never as alluring as women in their prime. But this outfit highlighted her youthful innocence while also arousing some desire. It was a very rational choice.
Soon, another half hour passed, and Brett, who had been waiting for a long time in a nearby coffee shop, received the notification and came out in person to greet the granddaughter of the Igor family.
Before they arrived, the butler had already given Bright the girl's information.
The girl's father is the vice dean of the Milan Dier Financial Institute and is expected to become the dean within a few years. The girl is an outstanding scholar, and with the added advantage of being from a ducal family, she seems to be exceptionally talented.
However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that this is not an ideal option. The Duke has many children, but intelligence indicates that there is no heir. To inherit the Duke's household, one must either be an important Minister of the Interior, such as the Minister of Finance in Mirandil, or the Minister of the Interior, or the one who fought for the old Duke in the southern barbarians.
Neither of these statements means that Bright is not yet qualified to be a competitor for the direct lineage.
While the dean of the college holds a prestigious position, the resources available to him are relatively scarce.
But Bright thought it was a good choice. Being a scholar meant that the relationships might not be so complicated, and being away from the power struggles within the Duke's family was also a good thing for him. Because once he became a member of the direct line, he would inevitably be targeted by other members of the direct line because of his choice of sides, and might even be investigated. That would be detrimental to his development in Holy Stone City.
Of course, this doesn't mean it's the most suitable option. While it won't attract the attention of other forces within the Igor family, the support it provides is indeed limited. In fact, compared to other options, the Duke's family, with several of his in-laws being merchants, would be a better fit.
Just then, the old butler's familiar voice appeared: "Mr. Bright, I'm sorry to have kept you waiting."
"You're too kind," Bright replied with a smile, then looked at the girl behind the butler.
A girl with glasses?
wrong...
Is this... a literature major girl in black stockings and glasses?
I go!
Bright's heart skipped a beat.
Nayuki carefully observed the other person. When she saw that the other person's gaze quickly shifted from her face to the black stockings on her thighs, her face immediately turned red and she squeezed her legs together.
This was her first time using her body to attract men, so it was understandable that she was a little nervous. But the butler was right; no man is immune to lust. This Mr. Bright looked refined and cultured, and what first attracted him was his black stockings...
"Mr. Bright, now that you've brought them here, I won't disturb you any longer. Have a wonderful date."
"Thank you for your help." Bright snapped out of his daze, his expression a little awkward. Damn it, even after two lifetimes, he was still immediately attracted to black stockings. He hadn't improved at all. Didn't Mrs. Eliza often wear these things?
However, we felt differently about each other. The literature-loving bespectacled girl was my favorite type before, and she was indeed too charming. This Miss Nayuki... has great taste!
"Shall we go, Miss Nayuki?" Bright extended his hand in a gentlemanly gesture.
Nayuki smiled and nodded, then reached out her hand and took the other person's arm.
Their first date was at a quiet coffee shop. Nayuki ordered a black coffee, while Brett, as always, went all out with cream and syrup.
"Mr. Bright seems to prefer sweeter flavors?" Nayuki looked at him with some curiosity.
In her mind, most men, even if they're just pretending, would order black coffee in a coffee shop to make themselves appear more mature and composed.
"Life is mostly bitter, so if you have the chance to eat something sweet, try not to suffer," Bright said while stirring his coffee.
"That makes sense..." Nayuki nodded.
"Why did Mr. Bright choose to return to Holy Stone City? Isn't Mirandil better?" Nayuki asked after adding a sugar cube to her coffee.
"Milandil is nice, but it's not right for me right now," Bright said with a smile. "Miss Nayuki, would you like to stay in Milandir?"
Nayuki shook her head upon hearing this: "If I were to marry Mr. Bright, I would naturally follow you wherever you go."
Brett paused slightly in his coffee cup. This was the first time he had ever heard a girl say such a thing to him, from his past life to the present.
Although I've been a shut-in for two lifetimes, I still couldn't handle this kind of confession.
"I've heard that Miss Nayuki is a highly educated scholar and even has the opportunity to teach at a university. Why are you willing to go with me to such a remote place as Holy Stone City?"
"Naturally, it's because of you." Nayuki looked at Bright: "Following you, there will be a better future."
"Why are you so sure?" Bright asked, taken aback.
"I trust Grandpa's judgment, and I trust the housekeeper's judgment, and besides, you are very good-looking."
It really does take modeling to work.
Bright straightened his back with a hint of smugness.
"You are very beautiful too, Miss Nayuki."
"Thanks...
