Chapter 2 First Kill of the Death Star
Chapter 2 First Kill of the Death Star
Zhao Chen was awakened by a sudden feeling of hunger.
He felt as if a fire was burning in his stomach; the sharp and lingering hunger made Zhao Chen extremely uncomfortable.
Opening his eyes, Zhao Chen found himself still curled up in the crevice. Outside, the sky remained unchanged, and the howling wind swept across the land.
"We finally survived."
This was Zhao Chen's first thought after regaining consciousness. His second thought, however, was even more direct: hunger.
Zhao Chen slowly crawled out of the crevice, standing atop the massive rib, silently gazing down at this utterly desolate world. The warmth he had felt from yesterday's devouring had long since dissipated after a night of digestion.
If there's anything left in the body now, it's just a tiny, barely perceptible change: the feathers seem a bit brighter, and the claws are slightly stronger. Other than that, there are no other changes.
"After swallowing more than a dozen bone fragments, this is all the progress I've made." "This talent is really stingy." Zhao Chen felt a little bitter.
Despite his complaints, Zhao Chen knew better than anyone that he had no other choice.
If you want to continue living, the only way is to devour.
It swallows rocks, bones, minerals, and anything else it can put in its mouth.
He looked down at his injured left wing. After a night of healing, the deep, bone-revealing wound had now formed a thin scab. Although it still hurt, it was no longer bleeding.
At this rate, after absorbing bone fragments for a few more days, he should be completely healed. Zhao Chen thought to himself.
"Keep swallowing."
With a gentle flap of his wings, Zhao Chen flew toward a skeleton not far away.
You only realize it when you get close.
This is a skeleton over 100 meters long, half-buried in the rock layer, with only a section of the spine and a dozen or so ribs exposed.
The bone was a pale grayish-white color, and its surface was covered with cracks. It lay there quietly, having lived for countless years.
Zhao Chen landed on a rib, gently pecked off a small piece of bone with his beak, and swallowed it.
Instantly, a warm current began to slowly flow into Zhao Chen's body.
Take another peck. Swallow again.
Zhao Chen slowly devoured the food, like a real crow. Although each bite felt rough and unpleasant to swallow, he didn't stop.
An hour passed slowly, during which Zhao Chen pecked at more than a dozen bone fragments and swallowed them all.
A gentle warmth gradually spread through my abdomen; though faint, it was real.
Zhao Chen could clearly feel a faint energy being slowly absorbed by his body. It seeped into his flesh and blood, merged into his bones, and nourished all the feathers on his body. The wound on his left wing also began to itch slightly, a sign that it was healing.
"It works."
Zhao Chen perked up and continued to bury himself in his food.
-
By sunset, the bone fragments that Zhao Chen could peck at on the ribs had been completely eaten away.
At this moment, Zhao Chen felt a warm sensation in his stomach, and his whole body was filled with strength. The wound on his left wing had also healed most of the way. Although he still couldn't engage in strenuous exercise, he no longer felt any pain. His feathers had also become shinier than yesterday, no longer looking dry and messy as before.
But the benefits didn't stop there. Zhao Chen could clearly feel that he had become stronger again. Although the feeling was still very faint, it was undeniable that he had become stronger.
"Is this what it feels like to become stronger?" Zhao Chen murmured softly. After a long while, Zhao Chen returned to his bone crevices to rest. Before going to sleep, Zhao Chen habitually looked up at the sky.
Against the greyish-black sky, a few dim stars appeared and disappeared. They were like glimmers of light from the distant universe, traversing the endless void and landing on this planet.
Zhao Chen withdrew his gaze and curled his body up even tighter.
The wind continued to howl outside, lashing against the rocks with a low, mournful sound. Closing his eyes, Zhao Chen began to drift off to sleep.
-
The days that followed were repetitive, monotonous, and tedious for Zhao Chen.
During the day, he moved back and forth among the skeletons, pecking at bone fragments; at night, he huddled in the crevices of the bones, digesting the energy he had gained during the day. Seven days passed in the blink of an eye.
Zhao Chen's injuries had long since healed, and he had grown a full size larger than before. His feathers were thicker, and his claws and beak were sharper. His flight was no longer a shaky flapping, but a steady, continuous flight that could last for fifteen minutes.
His strength was nearly double what it had been seven days ago. Zhao Chen sighed inwardly.
That evening, Zhao Chen was resting on a rib when he suddenly heard a series of faint sounds.
It was the sound of gravel scraping against each other. Zhao Chen instantly became alert and looked in the direction the sound came from.
Not far away, a grayish-brown creature slowly crawled out from a pile of rocks. It looked about three feet long, shaped like a lizard, covered in fine scales, with thick limbs, a long and powerful tail, and a mouth full of sharp teeth.
Seemingly sensing Zhao Chen's presence, it began to rapidly approach Zhao Chen's direction.
"Predator!"
Zhao Chen's pupils contracted slightly. This was the first time he had encountered a living being since arriving on this planet.
The lizard then noticed that Zhao Chen had spotted it, and suddenly accelerated, lunging towards Zhao Chen!
Zhao Chen instinctively tried to flap his wings and fly, but just as his body rose into the air, he was struck hard by the lizard's tail, his body tilted, and he crashed heavily to the ground.
"Gah—"
Zhao Chen couldn't help but cry out in pain, feeling intense pain coursing through his entire body. This lizard's strength was far greater than he had imagined.
At this moment, the lizard suddenly opened its blood-red maw and lunged at Zhao Chen.
At that critical moment, Zhao Chen rolled desperately, narrowly dodging the fatal attack. At the same time, he gathered all his strength and fiercely grabbed at the lizard's eye.
"There was a loud 'plop' sound!"
Blood splattered everywhere. The lizard was forced to let out a shrill scream and began to twist its body wildly. Its tail swept out again, sending Zhao Chen flying.
Zhao Chen was swept away and crashed into a cold rock, his bones feeling like they were falling apart in excruciating pain.
But he didn't give up. He struggled to his feet again and pounced on the lizard once more.
This time, Zhao Chen landed directly on the lizard's back, gripping its back tightly with his claws, and began frantically pecking at the back of its head with his beak.
One peck, two pecks, three pecks...
The lizard began to struggle desperately on the ground, trying to shake Zhao Chen off. But Zhao Chen gritted his teeth, holding on tightly, refusing to let go even a little.
Zhao Chen pecked at it countless times before the lizard's struggles gradually subsided, and it finally collapsed to the ground, motionless.
After getting off the lizard's back, Zhao Chen began to pant heavily, his feathers stained with blood—some his, some the lizard's.
Looking at the corpse on the ground, Zhao Chen's eyes began to become somewhat complicated.
This was the first life he had ever hunted in this world.
It was also another resource he gained from his talent for devouring.
Zhao Chen crawled toward the lizard's corpse and began to devour it.
The instant the flesh and blood entered his stomach, a warm current, several times more concentrated than bone fragments, spread throughout his body. Zhao Chen could clearly sense that his strength, speed, and reaction were all increasing at a noticeable rate.
What surprised him even more was a feeling.
As Zhao Chen slowly digested the flesh and blood, a faint yet remarkably clear coolness rose from his abdomen, eventually reaching the top of his head. This coolness wasn't intense, but it instantly cleared his fatigue-induced haze.
It was like a clear spring, gently pouring onto his soul.
Closing his eyes, Zhao Chen was instantly immersed in this feeling. When he opened his eyes again, the whole world began to change in his eyes.
The direction the wind blew, the location of the pebbles, the tiny insects wriggling under the distant rocks… everything was clearly imprinted in Zhao Chen's mind. He didn't need to look or listen; an invisible perception slowly spread from his mind, enveloping an area several feet around him.
"This is... mental power?"
Zhao Chen felt a slight tremor in his heart.
Devouring the lizard not only strengthened Zhao Chen's physical strength but also significantly enhanced his night vision. Now, even his soul has been nourished and improved. The cool sensation he felt earlier was a sign of his soul's growing strength.
Zhao Chen tried to extend his perception outwards. One zhang, two zhang, three zhang... As the distance increased, his perception gradually became blurred, and beyond five zhang, only a faint sensation remained.
But it is true that he has already acquired this entirely new sense.
More perceptive than the eyes, and clearer than the ears.
With this ability, he will never have to fear being ambushed by predators in the dark again.
An hour later, the three-foot-long lizard carcass had been completely devoured by Zhao Chen.
Lying on the ground, Zhao Chen quietly felt the power surging within his body and the clear perception in his mind, a hint of excitement rising in his eyes.
His size had increased again, his feathers were more robust, and his claws and beak were sharper. His reaction time, speed, and strength were all significantly improved. His night vision had also advanced by leaps and bounds; what was once a somewhat blurry darkness was now as clear as day to him.
"So devouring living creatures can bring so many benefits..." Zhao Chen murmured softly.
Zhao Chen didn't know why his Devouring Talent was called the Supreme Talent.
Because when other creatures devour corpses, they only gain some strength and vitality, and may even suffer some loss in the process.
He, however, can devour and inherit everything about the other party—power, speed, talent, and even soul and fortune.
This is true devouring.
Standing up, Zhao Chen gazed at the distant, undulating black mountain range.
There should be more living beings there.
There, there should be even more precious talents and richer soul power waiting for him to devour.
Spreading his wings, Zhao Chen flew towards the mountains.
The night wind blew, and his figure gradually disappeared into the darkness.
Meanwhile, in his mind, that newly born soul perception was quietly unfolding, silently enveloping the surrounding darkness and illuminating the path ahead for him.
