Chapter 27 Return to Lantas Village
Chapter 27 Return to Lantas Village
The speedster standing in the bushes was dumbfounded.
Luo Xu seems to be moving faster?
"Everyone, move the bodies together and see if anyone is missing," Walter ordered.
After a while, Luo Xu looked at the pile of bandit corpses, counted them carefully, and then breathed a sigh of relief.
All the robbers are here.
The crisis in Lantas village has been completely resolved.
The militiamen returned to the bandit camp and began to take stock of the supplies.
Everything usable in the cave was moved to the open space on the hillside. Several large wooden crates, a few bulging burlap sacks, and scattered iron tools were piled up like a small mountain.
The weapons on the weapon rack and those taken from the corpses were grouped together separately.
After the inventory was completed, Walter had several militiamen move the main supplies back to the village, while he and Luo Xu stayed at the camp to keep watch.
"Captain, should we send them back first?" Luo Xu took off his cotton armor and pointed to the two women from Sagorie.
"Let's talk about it after we've moved all this stuff," Walter said, pulling Roshur aside in a low voice. "If they bring their village militia, it'll be a real problem."
Walter was vague, but Luo Xu understood what he meant.
There were many valuable items in this bandit camp, and the militia of Sagorliya knew that once the bandits were eliminated, they would definitely come to get a share of the loot.
"Take a break," Walter patted Luo Xu on the shoulder.
"But I'm not tired yet," Luo Xu said with a smile.
Despite not having slept all night, he didn't feel sleepy at all.
"You're still too young. You'll fall asleep the moment your head hits the pillow when you get into bed."
While the two were chatting, the first group of militiamen returned to the bandit camp on horseback, followed by a dozen or so villagers.
Amidst excited shouts, two carts pulled by mules came into view.
Upon seeing Luo Xu, they all cast respectful glances at him, clearly aware of his deeds.
The wooden crates were loaded onto a cart, and the supplies that had been piled up like a small mountain gradually leveled out.
"Luo Xu, you should go back first," Walter said as he carried a sack onto the cart.
"Uh..." Luo Xu didn't take a step or make a sound.
He certainly wanted to go back and let Sarah and Alina know he was safe, but he was also afraid that something might have happened here.
Walter saw what he was thinking and gave him a push: "Go back and rest, I'll keep an eye on things here."
"Okay." Luo Xu ran a few steps, glanced back, and then ran towards Lantas Village.
Once he could no longer see the bandit camp, he subconsciously touched the flag cloth on his chest.
This flag cloth cannot be handed over yet.
His strength was insufficient to protect the rewards he had earned, and besides, rashly handing over the dragon flag would only prematurely embroil him in the political struggles between the imperial factions.
Let's accumulate strength first and make a decision when the time is right.
Luo Xu walked through a grove of trees and began to think about where to hide the dragon flag.
Keeping it myself is definitely not an option.
As a stranger in a foreign land, he already attracted attention. Now that he has single-handedly taken down the bandit camp, the attention he receives will only increase, and the probability of him being discovered by others is too high.
He wouldn't feel at ease hiding it somewhere. He'd have to check on it frequently, and it was easy for him to be discovered.
The first person he thought of was Alina, the person Luo Xu trusted most in Lantas Village.
But Marcus and Leah are at the age where they rummage through drawers and cupboards, and it would be troublesome if they found something and started playing with it.
While Luo Xu was thinking, he suddenly thought of a suitable candidate.
"Oh right, you can give it to her for safekeeping."
Having made up his mind, Luo Xu looked ahead and quickened his pace.
Soon, the outline of Lantas village came into view.
Many villagers were standing at the village entrance, helping the militiamen unload supplies from the carts, their faces showing relief.
Suddenly, he spotted a familiar figure in the crowd.
"Luo Xu!" Alina rushed over, shuddering at the sight of his blood-covered face. "Are you hurt?!"
"No." Luo Xu shook his head.
Alina held his gaze for a while before patting her chest and murmuring, "It's alright, it's alright."
Luo Xu wanted to chat a little longer, but Alina insisted that he go to Galon's house first to take a shower and get some rest.
After saying goodbye to Alina, Luo Xu ran to Galon's house.
As he walked on the muddy road, Sarah's pretty face appeared in his mind.
The front gate of the Galon family's house was not closed, and several servants had already begun to busy themselves.
When Luo Xu pushed open the door, the hall was still dimly lit.
Sarah sat at the table, staring at the burnt-out oil lamp in front of her. She was wearing the same clothes as yesterday, her hair disheveled and draped over her shoulders, her eyes were deep-set with obvious dark circles under them, as if she hadn't slept all night.
Hearing the door open, she turned her head sharply.
"Sarah!" Luo Xu strode over to her in just a few steps.
"Luo Xu!" Sarah stood up abruptly, but because she moved too quickly, her arm knocked over a water glass on the table.
But she ignored it completely, and anxiously asked Luo Xu, whose face was covered in blood, "Are you injured?"
"No, it's the blood of those bandits."
Sarah didn't say anything more. She carefully examined Luo Xu from head to toe. After confirming that he was really not injured, her eyes became moist.
"You..." Luo Xu noticed her haggard face and asked softly, "Have you been waiting for me?"
"Hmm." Sarah didn't avoid Luo Xu's gaze, looking directly at him, her hands gripping the hem of her skirt tightly. "I can't sleep—I'm so worried about you."
After saying this, she did not blush and look away as usual; the hesitation and probing in her deep green eyes were gone.
Her gaze was sincere and ardent, instantly dispelling the chill of early autumn.
After Luo Xu left yesterday, she kept praying for his safe return. She tried to lie in bed, but as soon as she closed her eyes, she could see his back as he turned and walked into the night.
Unable to sleep, she tossed and turned, so she got out of bed with her cane and sat at the table in the living room to wait for him.
That night, the experiences of the past few days flashed through her mind like a revolving lantern. She thought about it for a long time, and the more she thought about it, the more certain she became of one thing.
She wasn't waiting for a savior to return; she was waiting for the person she loved to return.
And now, he is standing right in front of me.
Sarah suddenly let go of her cane, took a step forward and threw herself into Luo Xu's arms. Her pretty face was burning red and her whole body was slightly hot, which could be felt even through the layer of clothing.
A voice as faint as a mosquito's buzz came from over.
"I like you."
The world seemed to pause at that moment, so quiet that the two of them could feel each other's heartbeats.
After Sarah finished speaking, she felt as if all her strength had been drained away. She buried her face in his chest, not daring to look up, and even her breathing became much lighter than before.
