Chapter 23 I'm living only to hold you back
Chapter 23 I'm living only to hold you back
In Santo Domingo, at an abandoned small stadium, two people sat on a bench on the street, completely unsure of where to begin.
After all, no one has a yellow exclamation mark above their head, and no one has "I'm short-handed" written on their face.
Li Wei knew where those middlemen operated, but their status was too high for them. Without fame, who would care about you? Most importantly, they only knew the general location; they didn't even know where the people were.
They did know where Rogge and Wakako were, but due to reputational or equipment and technical requirements, the two couldn't even get through the gate.
"Li, if you ask me, we should find some transportation work that's more stable."
Li Wei sat on the bench, his hand supporting his chin, watching the people coming and going around him, and spoke with a somewhat annoyed tone.
"Transportation is all the work of the homeless. Everything else is leftovers, not even worth a penny. Don't even think about your connections. I'm sure none of them are reliable."
Carl leaned back on the bench, his head tilted back, staring at the sky with a hollow voice.
"Don't even mention a mosquito's leg, it would be good enough if we could earn enough for food first."
The situation was completely different from what he had imagined.
Li Wei maintained his thinker's posture and retorted.
"The problem is, transportation jobs aren't something you can just get whenever you want. There's a high chance we'll just make a wasted trip to the badlands. If we don't get any jobs, we won't even be able to afford gas."
Carl knew that Levi was right, and said dejectedly.
"Sorry, Li, I've really messed with you."
"Why bring this up? In this world, it's not easy to find a friend you can roll around in the mud with."
"Ha~ Thanks."
Although the two men were in much better spirits, the harsh reality of not being able to find a way out left the two older hoodlums sitting on the bench, lost in thought.
In the end, Carl said with a conflicted expression.
"Let's go, get in the car."
"Where to?"
"Trailer Park, that's where I used to live, and where I met a lot of people. It's on the outskirts of town."
Li Wei knew exactly where everything was; when they were playing the game, River, the cop, lived there.
"I asked in doubt."
"Where can you find work?"
Carl shrugged and spread his hands.
"Who knows? What if someone gets into trouble? Anyway, let's give it a try. It's not far from here."
Li Wei had no further objections; since things had come to this point, there was nothing he could do but give it a try.
It's just a few blocks away by car; at the entrance to the main street is an abandoned gas station, which has been taken over by various vendors.
Carl parked the car on the side of the road, got out, and waved to Levi.
"Let's go eat first, but we can only have bean porridge for now."
Li Wei sat on a small stool at a roadside stall, while Karl went to find the owner first.
A short while later, the boss and Carl brought over two bowls of wontons, and Carl was heard talking to the boss on the way.
"Don't worry, we'll take it."
"Then I'll leave it to you. I'll get back to what I'm doing."
OK.
Li Wei raised an eyebrow, looking at Karl sitting opposite him. "So, you've found a job already?"
"Eat up, we still need to help move the goods later."
Li Wei rolled his eyes, thinking he was going to do something else, but it turned out to be just odd jobs.
The two settled down there and took on any job they could find, doing odd jobs, threatening thugs, acting as temporary henchmen, and running errands for others.
As for the house, just find any place that no one lives in, clean it up, and that's it. It just won't have water, electricity, or furniture.
Half a month later, Carl opened the door and shouted at Livy, who was lying dead on his bedding roll.
"Li, get up! I found that bastard! He dared to blow up my house, I'm going to kill him!"
Carl remained resentful that he had been tricked by that shady middleman.
Upon hearing Karl's shout, Li Wei calmly scratched his buttocks like a salted fish.
"How many times has this happened? Is he at that tavern or the Mewtwo Experience Center this time?"
Carl said it with absolute certainty.
"This news is absolutely true! He was hanging out with those who were harvesting kidneys, in an apartment building north of the Colorado ranch, six of them."
Li Wei suddenly jumped out of bed, threw off his pillow, picked up his pistol, stood up, pulled the trigger and fired a bullet, grabbed it, checked the pistol, and excitedly said.
"Then let's go."
Li Wei could barely contain his smile. Finally, he could start making money. Heaven had mercy on him. The past two weeks had been a blur. The most ruthless thing he had done was intimidate petty thugs. This was definitely not the passionate experience he wanted.
Upon arriving downstairs, Carl pulled out his microphone and, looking at the apartment building with a serious expression, gave a reminder.
"Li, this is an apartment building. Although the NCPD doesn't really handle things, once the gunshots start, they could appear at any time within ten minutes. We need to finish this quickly."
Li Wei turned to smile at Karl, who was sitting in the main seat and seemed a little nervous, handed him the pistol, got out of the car, closed the door, and walked straight towards the apartment building.
Li Wei's nonchalant attitude towards life and death, his "fight if you're not convinced" attitude, was quite intimidating; at least Karl wasn't so nervous anymore.
Looking at the submachine gun in his hand, he simply threw it on the car, picked up his pistol, and chased after them.
Inside the elevator, Carl drew his pistol and asked.
"Li, should we storm in directly, or sneak in?"
Li Wei said without hesitation.
"Are you going to use force, or do you know how to pick locks or hack? If we force the door open, it will alert the people inside. Once I nod, you can take care of the surveillance camera, and I'll handle the other issues."
"Okay, whatever you say."
Upon arrival, the two stood at the door. Li Wei nodded, and Karl used his gun to disable the surveillance cameras in the building. Li Wei then pulled out a Copperhead rifle from his two-dimensional chrysanthemum, held the gun, and kicked open the door.
As he walked inside, he opened fire on the two people who had stood up from the sofa to grab weapons from the coffee table.
Pull the trigger all the way down, the bullet leaves a bloody hole and sparks in the enemy's body.
Someone shouted from the next room.
"Someone's come in, grab your weapons."
Carl followed him in and recklessly rushed to the two men who had been shot down by Levi, firing several shots into one of them in the forehead.
Li Wei cursed under his breath, threw the empty rifle in his hand toward the door of the inner room, and drew his longsword to rush toward the door.
Just then, a man rushed out with a gun, but before he even entered the room, he was shot. Before he could even raise his gun in pain, Li Wei, who had anticipated his move, stabbed him through the heart.
Li Wei gripped the sword tightly and pulled it upwards, drawing the man into a Y-shape with sparks flying, followed by a burst of gunfire.
By the time Karl picked up the weapon from the coffee table and rushed in, the battle was already over.
Li Wei clutched his pierced abdomen, leaning against the wall with his sword, panting.
Carl threw down his gun and rushed to Levi, pacing anxiously in circles.
"Damn it, Li, are you alright?! Shouldn't you have been hiding and reloading, taking them out while they were shooting at me? Why did you rush in?!"
He then went to help Li Wei up.
"I'll take you to see a doctor right away."
Li Wei grabbed Karl in front of him angrily.
"Are you out of your mind?!"
"I'm just a worthless life, Li. I know that all I'm doing is holding you back."
"Fuck you."
